More than 200 activities a week offer you many choices, such as swim club, political discussions, volunteering at the Child Development Center, creative writing courses, dances, choir, pool playing, the Lakeview Band and more.

At the same time, you can say good-bye to house-cleaning, yard maintenance, cooking (unless you want to cook), gardening (unless you enjoy it), and property maintenance. Bi-weekly housekeeping, weekly flat-linen service, one ample and delicious meal per day, landscape maintenance, and all property maintenance are provided. You can invest your time in what's most important and valuable to you.

Social Gatherings and Get-Togethers

Coffees with friends, pool games, movies with popcorn, all-campus extravaganzas, and many more – take part in any you like.

Larger events include:

  • Dances - Lakeview’s portable dance floor moves to different spots on campus
  • Neighborhood holiday parties
  • Chapel twice weekly, with over 150 residents representing about 35 denominations attending on Sundays
  • Annual Events, such as SummerFest and the Tailgate Party in the fall.

Volunteering is “huge” at Lakeview. More than 50% of our residents volunteer, either on or off campus, or both. Popular volunteer activities include:

  • The What Not Shop - more than 60 residents volunteer at Lakeview’s large, active resale shop.

  • The Child Development Center - an award-winning Center for children 6 weeks to 6 years old.

  • The Library - some 35 resident volunteers ensure excellent order among the 3,000 volumes, numerous reference books, tapes, easy chairs and tables, and a reading machine. In 2006 the library checked out its 15,000th book.

  • Uncle Bob's Pantry - a small food and sundries shop.

  • The Resident Council - which represents all neighborhoods and serves as a powerful channel of communication between residents and the management team.

  • Channel 2 - our own closed circuit TV station.

  • Project Teams - innovations start here, with residents participating fully in the development of new ideas for programs and services.

  • Residents volunteer for a huge number of organizations all over the city, from Project HeadStart to historical societies, to schools and hospitals. Whatever your volunteering interest, other Lakeview residents are likely already volunteering - or ready to join you.

Excursions

If it’s interesting, we probably are there! Historical museums, the opera, theatre, casinos, newest restaurants, and much more - our residents do it all. Three buses ensure you can go with friends and that you don’t have to drive (or park).

Transportation

Our 3 buses help residents save on gas, parking, and on their nerves. Included in the monthly fees are regularly scheduled trips:
• Around campus 8:00 am through dinnertime
• Supermarkets and shopping centers near campus
• Popular shopping destinations such as Oak Park Mall and Wal-Mart
• Central Resource and Lackman Libraries
• Various banks

In addition, buses go to popular cultural and entertainment destinations such as Starlight Theater, New Dinner Theatre, kansas City Repretory Theatre, KC Royals, T-bones baseball games, Johnson County Community College, the Lyric Opera, plays, restaurants, and casinos. Participants usually pay a nominal charge for this service.

Intergenerational Activities

Anyone who enjoys young people – of any age – will love it at Lakeview. In addition to the Child Development Center, we have a Grandfriends program with an elementary school; older school-age volunteers who help residents with work to be done around homes; high school servers in our dining rooms who develop wonderful friendships with residents; and community college students who play Bunko here. Not to forget all the family activities....

Wellness

Wellness is so important it has its own section. Please see Wellness and the Community Center.

Educational Pursuits

“An active mind in an active body” describes the typical Lakeview resident – committed to learning more and sharing their knowledge. We have residents with enormous breadth and depth of life, career, and experience – from retired scientists and fighter pilots, to master gardeners and a mother of 10.

Continuing education programs may include art history, foreign languages and computer use. Travelogues by residents are frequent. Second Sundays, a program sponsored jointly with the Johnson County Library, brings a published author to campus to discuss his or her book and do a book signing. “Voices”, entirely organized by residents, invites controversial speakers of all persuasions to campus.

The Lakeview Book Club, a program facilitated by the Kansas Humanities Council, typifies the collaboration between residents and staff. A resident organized and runs the club, which selects a series of 4 to 5 books with a common theme and reads one each month. A staff person does the paperwork to have the books shipped to Lakeview, where they are distributed to Book Club members. The staff person also arranges for a monthly guest speaker, usually a professor or teacher from somewhere in Kansas, to come and lead a discussion about the book just read.
